Not many people realise that even after divorce unless you have formally dealt with your finances, should you win the lottery or come into a windfall of money in some other way, your former partner is entitled to part of that financial gain. If you get your finances dealt with through a Consent Order, a clause can be inserted stating that you and your former partner will not be entitled to any financial gain either of you obtain in the future. It provides you with a clean break from one another financially. Presumably, any financial gain you make in your new life as a single person or from being in a new relationship, you don’t want to have to share it with your former partner? Make dealing with your finances formally, one of your New Year Resolutions and contact a member of the Family Department.
