Power of Attorney Refunds
It has recently been announced that if you registered your Power of Attorney between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017 you may be entitled to a refund of part of the registration fee.
You can claim a refund if you are the person who made the Power of Attorney (the donor) or the person appointed as the attorney. The refund will be made to the person who made the Power of Attorney so when claiming ensure that you have details of the donor’s bank account.
Even if the donor has passed away, a refund can still be claimed to be paid to the donor’s estate to be distributed in accordance with the donor’s Will or intestacy provisions.
The amount of refund will depend upon the fee you paid at the time of registering the Power of Attorney but could be as much as £54 per Power of Attorney or as little as £34 per Power of Attorney.
Claiming the refund is simple and should not require the assistance of a Solicitor.
However, the refund can take up to 12 weeks to be processed. You can either claim on-line at www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney-refund or alternatively, you can claim by telephone on 0300 456 0300 (option 6).
